How it works. The rules we check, and why.

The limit is 249 bytes, 199 in India

Amazon’s rule is “less than 250 bytes”, and less than 200 in India, so 249 and 199 are the most that fit. Guides that say 250 are off by one. Japan allows more in some categories but not others, so we use 249 there too. Amazon says spaces don’t count; we count them anyway, so a field that fits here fits in Seller Central.

Bytes, not characters

Amazon counts UTF-8 bytes. Letters a to z, digits and spaces take 1 byte. Accented letters like é, ü and ß take 2, as do Arabic letters. Japanese, Chinese and Hindi take 3. A German or Japanese field holds fewer words than an English one.

Each word once, in any order

Amazon matches the words in any order and together with your title, so “mat thick” also matches “thick mat”. Repeats, plurals and capital letters add nothing: Amazon already matches “mats” to “mat”.

Your title and bullets are already indexed

Words in your title and bullet points don’t need to be here. Spend the bytes on words the listing doesn’t have: other names, synonyms, uses.

Single spaces, no punctuation, no filler

Separate words with one space. Commas and semicolons cost a byte each and do nothing. Words like “a”, “for” and “with” don’t help. We leave out English filler in every store, plus the store’s own, like “für” in Germany or “pour” in France.

What Amazon doesn’t allow

Brand names, yours or anyone else’s; ASINs and other product IDs; subjective claims like “best” or “amazing”; temporary words like “new” or “sale”; offensive words. We flag ASINs and a list of common English claims. Brand names you have to take out yourself.

What the cleaned field keeps

Your words in your order, minus everything above. If it still runs over, words that don’t fit drop out, and a shorter word after a long one can take the space left. Put your most important words first.

Building from keywords

Paste keywords one per line, or open the CSV the Shopperwords extension exports. We put the words found in the most keywords first, without filler, claims and your listing’s words, until the field is full.

Questions. About the Search Terms field.

Is the limit 249 or 250 bytes?

Amazon says less than 250 bytes, so 249 is the most. In India it’s less than 200, so 199.

Do spaces count toward the limit?

Amazon says they don’t. We count them anyway, so what fits here fits in Seller Central with room to spare.

Should I separate words with commas?

No. Use single spaces. A comma costs a byte and Amazon ignores it.

Do I need both singular and plural?

No. Amazon matches both, so one form is enough.

Can I use competitor brand names?

No. Amazon doesn’t allow brand names in Search Terms, yours or anyone else’s.

What happens if I go over the limit?

Amazon may ignore the field. Stay under it: the cleaned field always fits.

Is what I paste sent anywhere?

No. The checker runs in your browser. Nothing you paste leaves this page.
